Authorities to Spill Bagre Dam, Advices Residents to Relocate

17-Aug-2024

Bagre, Burkina Faso – Authorities of the Bagre Dam in the West African country of Burkina Faso, SONABEL, have announced the spillage of excess water from the dam on Monday.

In a statement signed by the Basin director of the White Volta Basin Secretariat of the country’s Water Resources Commission, Jesse Kazapoe, “the spillage is expected to cause the White Volta in Ghana to overflow its banks and occupy its normal flood plains”.

According to the statement, the water level at the Bagre dam has in recent times risen above the normal level, a situation which has prompted the authorities to spill the excess water to avoid further damage to the dam.

Over the years, the spillage of the dam has displaced a chunk of people with further devastating effects of submerging farmlands.

The statement therefore cautions residents particularly those along the White Volta to relocate to highland areas to avoid bearing the brunt of the deadly spillage.
